It's A Matter Of Conviction

I carried my first mobile phone on a business trip in about 1990.  “Mobile” was a generous way to describe it.  Heavy and large with a charging stand.  I had a firm conviction no reasonable business person would ever carry a phone with him on a trip.  Too much trouble.

I read in an article about leadership we like to follow “leaders who have conviction.”  The article talked about clarity, purpose, focus, and similar reasons to like conviction.  What is not to like about clarity, purpose, and focus?  But “conviction,” that needs some thought.

Despite the many books, articles, panels and experts, strategy remains elusive.  Nine months invested in writing strategy leaving three months to work on it before beginning the process again.  Awash in numbers, metrics, proscribed projects and idealistic visions is there any question why 62% of leaders say their greatest need is better alignment of their innovation system with strategy?

Strategy is leadership’s prediction of what is Most Important for the organization, or department, to focus its limited time and energy on.  As a prediction, there is much uncertainty so flexibility is required.  By focusing on what is Most Important, leadership’s prediction will also result in stopping some activities.  How can these predictions be better communicated throughout an organization to improved alignment between innovation and strategy?
